I think one of the most important tips I can give is to lock your hotel room door.
This past week I was staying at a Hyatt Place and was assigned a room. Upon using the key to enter the room I was having difficulty getting the key to work. Finally the key opened the door, and what did I see...some one's bag and clothes strung out all over the couch, and someone in the bed. Obviously the front desk person made a huge mistake. They quickly corrected the problem for me, but the invasion of that person's (and mine) privacy was pretty bad. And all this happened because the front desk person assigned an already assigned room, which could have been avoided if the person in the room just locked the door.
If this happens to you, be sure and send a note to the hotel's GM and copy the frequent guest program. In almost every case they'll try to fix the problem with a load of extra points, in my case 10,000 points.
So the bottom line is every time you get to your room, use the deadbolt, and if there is an additional lock, use that one too.
